Rootstep: Move Planner for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
From the first decision to your first weeks in the new home: Rootstep picks the steps that fit your move, puts them in order and dates each one from your moving day. Then it hands you the next one, wherever you look.
Free for 9 days, with no payment details. Then one payment, never a subscription.
Your plan in a minute
Tell Rootstep when you move, where to and who comes along. It leaves out what doesn't fit, puts the rest in order and counts every date from your moving day.
A checklist gives everyone the same list. Rootstep gives you yours, with dates.
150 days to go
Real steps from the app, counted from your day: every date on this page follows it. Turn on what applies, mark a step done, add a task of your own. In the app, your own tasks come with the Move Pass.
Part 1 of 4:TodaySat, 17 Oct 2026
Most days you won't even open Rootstep. Your next step is on your Home Screen, your Lock Screen and your wrist, and a busy week shows up before it comes.
Widgets
Widgets show the days to go and what's next. Tap the circle on a widget and the step is done, without opening the app. On the Lock Screen, the next step and the countdown are a glance away.
Reminders
Press a reminder for Mark done or Remind me tomorrow. Mark done asks for Face ID first, then your widgets move on.
Control Centre
Put the Next step control in Control Centre or on the Lock Screen, or give it the Action button. Your next step is one press away.
Apple Watch
The days to go, where your official steps stand and what comes next, a glance away. Tap the circle to mark a step done: you have a moment to undo, then it's done on your iPhone and for everyone sharing the move.
Needs Apple Watch with watchOS 26 or later, paired with an iPhone that has Rootstep.
Part 2 of 4:Before departureuntil Mon, 15 Mar 2027
The official pages, the papers, the money, the boxes and the people who help: each kept with the steps it belongs to.
Official pages
Rules differ from place to place, and they change. So Rootstep doesn't ship rules of its own. For each step with a local rule, it links the official page.
Rootstep is a planning guide. It is not a government service, it is not connected to any authority, and it is not legal advice. The office concerned always has the last word.
Each step with a local rule links the page that states it.
Read the rule and confirm the deadline with a tap. With Apple Intelligence, Rootstep can read the page on your device and suggest it. Either way, nothing enters your plan without you.
Rootstep checks that it's on the page, word for word.
Once a week Rootstep checks the page. If the sentence disappears, you hear about it. Your plan changes only when you confirm.
Documents
Rootstep lists the documents your plan needs, for each person, from the passports to the landlord's confirmation, and keeps track of what you hold.
Budget
Plan the move's budget by category and track what you spend in whatever currency you pay. Rootstep converts it into your budget's currency, so you always know where you stand.
Boxes
Print a sheet, stick them on, and point any phone camera at a box. The QR code holds the same text as the label, so you know what's inside without opening it. In Rootstep, Scan a label opens the box itself.
These are real QR codes. Try one with your phone's camera.
Family
Share a move with your family through iCloud. Everyone sees the same plan, picks up their own steps and talks about them right where the work is.
iPad
Every section sits in the sidebar, and a step opens beside its list, so you never lose your place in the plan.
Part 3 of 4:Moving dayTue, 16 Mar 2027
Moving day starts early and runs on the clock. Rootstep turns it into a list of what to do and when, and keeps the next line in view.
Moving-day list
Movers or a courier, pets, children, a car: the day's lines follow what you told Rootstep, for the day you leave and the day you arrive. From departure to arrival, Today shows only this list.
Dynamic Island
The day's next line, its time and how many lines are done, always in view. Open the Island, tap Done, and the next line takes its place. It's on the Lock Screen too, and in the Smart Stack on Apple Watch.
Part 4 of 4:ArrivalWed, 17 Mar 2027
Letters arrive in a language you may not read yet, the official steps after arrival have their dates, and the boxes need opening. Rootstep turns each into something you can do.
Letter helper
Rootstep reads the letter on your iPhone or iPad, translates it and finds its dates, shown next to the words as written. One tap turns it into an appointment, with what to bring.
Calendar
Turn on Calendar sync and Rootstep keeps a calendar of its own beside yours: an all-day event for each official deadline you set, and every appointment at its time. When a date moves, its event moves; when a step is done, its event goes.
Planning dates stay out, so everything in that calendar is a date that counts. The reminders stay Rootstep's, so nothing tells you twice.
Lock Screen
A Live Activity on the Lock Screen counts down to when you need to leave for the appointment, with the place, so the morning has one thing to watch.
Siri
Siri and Shortcuts know your move with nothing to set up: ask what's next or how many days are left, find an item, mark a step done or add a task.
Spotlight
Your steps and boxes show up in Spotlight, a box by what's packed in it. A result opens straight in Rootstep.
Assistant
Ask in your own words. The assistant answers from your steps, their official pages and the glossary, right on your iPhone or iPad, and shows you the lines it used.
Written answers need Apple Intelligence. Without it, the assistant answers with the matching lines of your plan, and the official pages, translation, letter scanning and the glossary still work.
Settled in, 28 Apr. When the last step is done, the move goes to Archived, and a copy of it can start the next one.
Made for everyone
Rootstep follows the settings you already use on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Try a few on this card from Today: it changes the way the app does.
Private by design
Your move lives on your iPhone and iPad and in your own iCloud, which we cannot read. Your Apple Watch gets its copy from your iPhone.
Pricing
Nine days with every feature, and no payment details to start. When they end, nothing is deleted and nothing is charged: your plan stays free to follow, to the last step.
After the trial
Follow your plan to the end.
Why not all free? Rootstep shows no ads and collects no data, so nothing else pays for it. Following your plan stays free; the Move Pass pays for the rest, once.
One payment, never a subscription
Shape the plan to your move, together. Everything in Free, and:
Yours for this move and every move after it, on every iPhone and iPad you use, and for your family through Family Sharing. The App Store shows the price in your currency before you buy.
No. Rootstep works for every move, across town or across the world. Say what applies, and the steps you don't need, like visas or customs, stay out of your plan. Boxes, moving day, the budget and reminders work the same for every move.
Yes. Rootstep works for every move, anywhere, because the plan is counted from your moving day. For many countries it links the official page for each step with a local rule, and more are added as people ask. Elsewhere a step asks you to check locally, and you can add the page yourself.
No. Until you set its deadline from the official page, an official step shows a planning date and says it isn't the official deadline. The office concerned always has the last word.
Nothing is deleted and nothing is charged. Everything you made in the 9-day trial stays yours to see: every move, document and box. You can keep marking steps done, and reminders already set keep coming. To change the plan again, or to add documents, boxes or people, there's the Move Pass.
No. There's nothing to sign up for. Your move stays on your devices and in your own iCloud, and sharing it with family goes through iCloud too.
No. Everything in Rootstep works without it. With Apple Intelligence, the assistant writes its answers on your device and can read an official page to suggest a deadline for you to confirm. Without it, the assistant answers with the matching lines of your plan, and you set each deadline from the official page yourself.
Yes. Share a move through iCloud with the people you choose, to edit or only to view. Everyone you invite edits under your Move Pass, and the Move Pass itself is shared through Family Sharing.
Try every feature for 9 days first, with no payment details. If you buy the Move Pass and it isn't what you expected, you can ask Apple for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com, as for any purchase on the App Store.
An iPhone with iOS 26 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26 or later. The Apple Watch app needs watchOS 26 or later and comes with Rootstep on the iPhone it is paired with. iCloud is needed to sync between devices and to share a move.
Start early, and the steps wait for you instead of the other way round. Rootstep: Move Planner, for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
Free for 9 days, with no payment details. Then one payment, never a subscription.
Have a good move.
